Legal Compliance Policy

Purpose

To facilitate good governance through proactive and accountable management of Monash University’s legal compliance framework.

Scope

All campuses of the university.

Policy Statement

Monash University will exercise and encourage accountable management by maintaining and continuously improving its legal compliance framework and processes.  Legal compliance will be managed through shared responsibility of Legal Compliance Officers, Heads of Departments and Policy Owners.

The Risk and Compliance Unit in the Vice-Chancellor's Division has overall responsibility for the co-ordination of legal compliance across the University.  The Audit Committee of Council oversees legal compliance accountabilities throughout the University.

Definitions

Department: Includes unit, faculty, division, portfolio, centre and any other groupings of academic and/or administrative areas.

Head of Department (HOD): Person who has overall responsibility and authority for the department.

Legal Compliance Officer (LCO): Person who has university-wide responsibility for a specific legislation and is deemed to have specialist operational knowledge and experience in a functional area associated with specific legislative obligations.

Policy Owner: An academic or management position or body responsible for the development, oversight and review of policy.
