HDR Candidature Research Misconduct Policy

Purpose

  • To ensure that the rights of both the university and the candidate are protected when an allegation of research  misconduct is made against a student engaged in research
  • To protect that the university’s reputation and the integrity of its research.

Policy Statement

The university is required to maintain the integrity of its research process. To that end it is obliged to investigate any allegation of research misconduct, as defined in the Discipline Statute 4.1 Part V Research misconduct.

Definitions

HDR: Higher degrees by research

MRGS: Monash Research Graduate School

RGSC: Research Graduate School Committee

Candidate: Includes a former candidate where the alleged research misconduct occurred while he/she was pursing the degree.

Research misconduct: Research misconduct means conduct in, or in connection with research that a) is dishonest, reckless or negligent; and b) seriously deviates from accepted standards within the scientific and scholarly community for proposing, conducting or reporting research.

Deviations from accepted research standards: includes: plagiarism; breach of copyright; misleading ascription of authorship; use of information in breach of any duty of confidentiality associated with the review of any manuscript or grant application; omission of reference to relevant published work of others for the purposes of inferring personal discovery of new information;

Deviations from accepted research standards (cont.): without authorisation taking, sequestering or materially damaging any research-related property of another; failing to obtain requisite ethics clearance before the research, or a step in the research, is performed; stating or presenting a falsehood including an omission of fact, so that what is stated or presented represents a material or significant falsehood.
