Unit And Course Quotas Policy

The following is a collation of relevant university decisions relating to the area of Unit and Course Quotas.

Authority for approval of course and unit quotas

The following is an extract from Statute 6.1.1 – University entrance and admission to courses, from the Monash University Calendar, in relation to the setting of course and unit quotas:

"5.1 Where the Academic Board is of the opinion that, having regard to the facilities and resources available, a limit should be placed on the number of persons who may in any year be admitted to any course of study or enrolled in any unit prescribed for any degree or diploma of the university, it may impose such a limit.

5.2 Where a limit has been imposed by the Academic Board pursuant to subsection 5.1 in respect of any course of study or enrolled in any unit -

5.2.1 it shall be a condition of admission to such course or enrolment in such unit that applicants be selected by an admissions committee appointed for the purpose by the faculty concerned; and

5.2.2 subject to section 6, applicants shall be selected on the basis of academic merit.

5.3 The provisions of subsection 5.2 do not apply to a person admitted with credit pursuant to Statute 6.1.4 - Admission with credit."

Delegation of the approval of unit quotas to the Education Committee

Further to the above legislation, the Academic Board, at its Meeting 4/99 (and in accordance with Council Resolution CL3/98/84), resolved to delegate the authority for the approval of unit quotas to the Education Committee.

Education Committee procedure in relation to unit quotas

In order to investigate unit quota applications, the Education Committee had previously agreed (at its Meeting 6/94) to request from faculties the following information, to be submitted by September each year:

• Name of unit
• Number of enrolments, by course, for the last three years
• Reason for quota and indication of previous quotas set
• Limitations, if any, on enrolment categories, and justification for these
• Criterion for admission to quota (eg academic merit, order of application
