Course Titling and Abbreviation Procedures

Please note that these procedures have not yet been revised or converted to the new format.

Tagging Degrees

When an award is tagged, the tag must relay a significant content. For example, Bachelor of Arts (Journalism) would be an example of a 'good' tag, while Bachelor of Arts (Humanities and Social Sciences) would not.

When a program is a tagged version of another program with the same basic form of title, there should be course structure similarities between the two. For example, a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Science (Environment) should have a basic structural relationship; two Bachelor of Business (tagged) degrees should have the same initial form. If this is not the case, then a specific title is more appropriate, as Bachelor of Business Systems would be more appropriate than Bachelor of Computing (Business Systems).

In a tagged degree, there should be a mechanism for students to move to the untagged form, or to an equivalent award, even if there is to be no intake into that course at first year. For example, a student who has enrolled in Bachelor of Arts (Asian Studies) should be able, if their interests or abilities have changed, to transfer to a Bachelor of Arts without significant loss of credit.

Approval of Tagged Coursework Award Titles

Faculties shall establish tags for generically structured and approved awards via proposals for major course amendments.

Course titling and abbreviation standards

These procedures address the need for a set of university standards in relation to degree and course titling and abbreviation. A set of university standards on naming conventions will be beneficial to all users of the student database, Callista, in order to ensure consistency of data entry within the course title, short name and abbreviation fields when either creating new course details or maintaining existing details. In addition to the issue of data entry, there is also a need to maintain consistency with award titles that are printed on academic transcripts and testamurs.

  1. Title, Short Name and Abbreviation text entries should be made using a mixture of upper and lower case characters, e.g Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Economics, The honours degree of Bachelor of Business (Accounting).
  2. Punctuation should not be used when abbreviating, i.e. Bachelor of Arts should be BA not B.A.
  3. There should be no spaces in abbreviations, e.g. BBus(Acc)(Hons) where honours is involved.
  4. If a course is a double degree course the two degrees should be separated by an and, e.g. Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws, the short name and abbreviation by / (forward slash). A double degree course short name and abbreviation should be, e.g. BA/LLB
  5. If a course has a specialisation in the text this specialisation should be enclosed in ( ) (round brackets), e.g. Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) with a space before the curved bracket
  6. If a course is a double degree course and there is a specialisation or specialisations approved for inclusion in the degree title, the specialisations may be enclosed in ( ) and the courses should be separated by an and, e.g.: Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Business (Accounting)
  7. If a course has a specialisation in the title, it may be dealt with in two ways:
    1. If it is enclosed in a bracket, it should be "Grad Dip of Generic (Specialisation)"
    2. If it is not enclosed in a bracket, it should be "Grad Dip in Specialisation"

The choice should be consistent with articulated courses, ie;

  • Grad Cert of x (y), Grad Dip of x (y), Masters of x (y), OR
  • Grad Cert in Specialisation, Grad Dip in Specialisation, Masters in Specialisation

Examples of how these standards would reflect in data entered into Callista are provided below.

Please note: the field of Short Name is an additional function in Callista which did not exist in the legacy systems. When data was converted to Callista, the IAS Project uploaded the data from the existing Abbreviation field (MUSIS) to both the Short Name field and Abbreviation field in Callista. The two fields should be used to reflect the same data and no variations should be entered in this area.
