Non-Award Programs Policy

Please note that this policy has not yet been revised or converted to the new format.

Faculty Certificates

These are non award courses with a certificate of completion given to successful candidates by the faculty rather than the University.

All Faculty Certificates comprise 24 points of University subjects.

All Faculty Certificates allow Recognition of Prior Learning in ways determined by the relevant faculty.

All Faculty Certificates allow people eligibility for entry to diplomas (postgraduate, graduate or undergraduate) in ways specified by individual faculties and in the context of admission requirements for the relevant diplomas.

  1. Certificates which contain subjects at an academic level below that of the relevant diploma, if passed at credit level or above, would allow entry into the diploma but would not permit credit to be granted for the subjects taken within the certificate.
  2. Certificates which contain subjects of the same academic level or higher than the relevant diploma, if passed at credit level or above, would allow entry to the diploma with credit, provided the subjects in the certificate are equivalent to any of those in the relevant diploma.

Faculty Certificates should remain faculty awards and the naming of certificates (eg. executive, professional, qualifying, faculty) should remain the responsibility of the faculties concerned.

Definitions

Non Award: A "working definition" of non-award follows:

"A non-award course is an academic course of study of varying length, normally not more than the equivalent of one semester (full-time), approved by a Faculty. Non-award courses are normally designed to meet the needs of specific clients, external to the University including the profession, industry and the community. The course of study may include subjects units approved by Education Committee and endorsed by Academic Board that are normally taken as part of award courses, and may result in articulation into award programs."

These are separate to and exclusive of "awards of the University" which are approved by Council and have the University's seal on the testamur.

Purpose

The objective of this policy is to set out the structure of non award programs.

Scope
