Grading Scale Policy

This policy is effective until 31 December 2008. From 1 January 2009 the new policy will take effect.

The following grading scales apply:

Near Pass Grades

Faculties determine whether or not to award the "NP’ grade:

Where faculties opt to employ the ‘NP’:

• in line with Faculty regulations, examiners should award an ‘NP’ grade for marks in the range 45-49. This is a signal that the case is to be reviewed at the Board of Examiners meeting.

• at the Board of Examiners meeting, a decision should be made as to whether the grade is to remain as ‘NP’ or be converted to ‘N’.

• faculties should, therefore not award more ‘NP’ grades than they are prepared to count toward the degree. They may, however, attach conditions to an ‘NP’ grade where sequences of subjects are involved.

The Faculty in which a student is enrolled for his or her degree has the right to make judgements regarding the use of NP grades in allowing progress in the degree.

Faculties should advise the Education Committee and the Academic Board of the function (if any) of NP grades in allowing student progression in each of the degree(s) offered.

Purpose

The objective of this policy is to ensure that a uniform grading scale for the evaluation of assessments for units and courses is used throughout Monash University.

When grades are awarded for coursework units or Honours coursework degrees the following scales should apply:

Rationale

Consistency in awarding grades across disciplines establishes common standards of achievement across Monash University. This enables students and stakeholders to have a standard measure of the level of the student's mastery of a unit or course.

Review Schedule

This policy will be considered for review three years after approval by Academic Board or earlier as required.
