English Language Requirements Policy

Purpose

This policy is currently under review following the raising of English language entry standards. For the current English language requirements, refer to the English Language Entry Requirements for Coursework Programs Procedures.

To ensure admissions processes are consistent across the University and that all applicants for degrees have the English skills to perform well in their studies.

Scope

Applicants for non-HDR or coursework programs at the University.

Policy Statement

The minimum English language entry requirements for courses at Monash University are the achievement of at least one of the following:

  1.  A Study Score of at least 25 in units 3 and 4 in any VCE English subject or what is judged to be an equivalent level of English language proficiency in an alternative pre-university English subject.
  2. All secondary schooling completed was in English and successful completion of at least two university level subjects in an institution where English is the language of instruction and assessment for the entire institution (with the possible exception of foreign language subjects). These subjects must be “English rich” and judged by the faculty offering the course for which application is sought as being an appropriate test of proficiency in English language for that course.
  3. Successful completion of at least two university level subjects and then completion, at an appropriate standard, of an English language test administered by Monash University. This option is only available on a case by case basis at the discretion of the faculty and in such cases the test will be funded by the faculty.
  4. Study in an institution where English is the language of instruction and assessment for the entire institution (with the possible exception of foreign language subjects), satisfactorily completing either;
at least the equivalent of the first year of a university course (completion of a TAFE or a Singapore Polytechnic Diploma  is regarded as meeting this requirement; if the institution was not in Australia, applicants must have met the requirement within the past two years)
    OR
    at least the equivalent of
a two year tertiary program (if the institution was not in Australia, applicants must have met the requirement within the past five years). There must be formal advice from the institution to support the claim that this requirement has been satisfied.
  5. IELTS (International English Language Testing System – academic) minimum test score of 6.0 with no individual band score less than 6.0. (This is accepted for both domestic and international students).
  6. TOEFL (American Test of English as a Foreign Language) minimum test score of 550 with a TWE (Test of Written English) score of at least 4.5. Scores must be available for both TOEFL and TWE.
  7. A computer-based TOEFL with a minimum test score of 213 with an Essay Rating (ER) of at least 5.
  8. Successful completion of the English Language Bridging Program, at the appropriate level, at the Monash University English Language Centre or other programs judged equivalent.

While these minimum standards must be met by all students there is a recognition that for students entering via special access pathways study scores may understate a student’s English ability and hence appropriate adjustment may be made with the approval of Admissions Committee.

II  Where applicants have more than one of the above achievements, only the most recent achievement will be considered in the entry decision.

III The VCE subject English as a Second Language (or equivalent in other programs) is acceptable for meeting equivalency 1 above.
