Types of credit
1. The university will grant credit for previous learning where this is assessed as equivalent to Monash University study, subject to the conditions and limits stated below.
2. Credit towards a course for previous learning may include credit transfer and recognition of prior learning.
2.1 Credit transfer may be granted for previous learning in a university or TAFE course or accredited course offered by a Registered Training Organisation, or overseas equivalents of these.
2.2 Recognition of prior learning (RPL) may be granted for previous non-accredited formal study such as professional development or on-the job-training, or for informal learning such as work experience.
3. RPL may also be granted for admission to a course, where an applicant’s previous non-accredited formal study or informal learning is assessed as equivalent to the prerequisite qualification.
4. Block credit transfer is normally considered to fulfil any progression requirements for a stage of a course. It may be granted for one or more semesters, and intends to advance students beyond the entry level requirements of a course.
5. Eligibility for credit towards a course does not guarantee admission to that course.
Credit Transfer
6. Students may apply for credit transfer where they have successfully completed units (ie achieved a mark of 50% or above) at a similar level and standard in previous studies. A near pass grade or terminating pass at another institution will not be considered successful completion of the unit. Credit transfer may be given for a near pass grade in a Monash University unit at the discretion of the managing faculty.
7. Credit transfer is assessed on the basis of equivalence of learning content in terms of the curriculum, depth of study and credit point value of the previous unit of learning. For specific credit to be granted, a unit or units of previous study must be equivalent to at least 80% of the curriculum and credit point value of a Monash University unit.
8. A Monash degree is an academically coherent and cumulative program of specific units that contribute not only to the acquisition of knowledge, but to the development of Monash graduate attributes. Enrolled students seeking credit for units undertaken at another institution will need to demonstrate that there is significant educational advantage that cannot be derived from studying Monash units. This applies to cross-institutional, study abroad and exchange study.
9. Applicants who have previously received credit towards a course offered by another institution must re-apply for credit towards a Monash course, providing verified copies of transcripts and other required documentation of all previous study for which they wish to receive credit. Any requirements for recency of previous study will apply.
Recognition of Prior Learning
10. Recognised prior learning is assessed on the basis of equivalent learning outcomes or competencies. Assessments will be evidence-based and the faculty will determine a variety of methods and instruments to establish equivalence.
Recency requirements
11. To be eligible for credit, previous study must have been completed within ten years prior to the year of application for credit. A lower time-limit for eligibility for credit may be set by the faculty board for courses in disciplines where the state of knowledge changes more rapidly. Exceptions may be made with the approval of the dean or dean’s nominee.
Limits on credit
12. Credit may be given for all units for which equivalence of learning is established up to the following limit. The student must still satisfactorily complete, at Monash University, at least 48 credit points in the course, or not less than half the course, whichever is less, in order to be awarded a degree, diploma or certificate for the course.
12.1 In the case of a 144 credit point undergraduate degree, this means that a maximum of 96 credit points of credit can be granted. In the case of a 48 credit point postgraduate diploma, it means that a maximum of 24 credit points of credit can be granted.
13. Exceptions to this rule are:
13.1 These limits do not apply to Monash University nested programs.
13.2 The faculty board may set a lower limit on total credit towards a course where this is warranted by considerations such as fulfilling the requirements of a professional accreditation body.
13.3 In a 72 credit point masters by coursework with a 24 credit point fifth year specialisation, credit will not be given for the specialisation.
13.4 Where a student is being transferred from one Monash course to another closely related course, limits on total credit may be waived at the discretion of the managing faculty dean or dean’s nominee.
13.5 For double degrees, students are obligated to meet the requirements of both individual awards and need to complete a set number of credit points of Monash University units within the course per award as specified by the managing faculty. The managing faculty can specify where credit must be allocated in the degree structure.
13.6 Limits on total credit may be waived at the discretion of the dean or dean's nominee for co-badged programs, for example a co-badged Masters degree comprising units undertaken at other universities.
